The Blue Ridge Parkway quarter was issued under the America the Beautiful program, which Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021 — five designs per year, each honoring a national park or federal site. The five-ounce silver bullion version is a direct enlargement of the circulating clad quarter, struck at three times the diameter and roughly 350 times the mass. North Carolina's site was selected partly because the Parkway, administered jointly by the National Park Service and the Blue Ridge Parkway Association, straddles two states; the quarter was attributed to North Carolina rather than Virginia by congressional assignment.
