Obverse description The obverse features the left-facing effigy of George Washington, first President of the United States, based on the classic design by John Flanagan after Houdon's portrait bust. The legend LIBERTY appears above the portrait, while IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the left of the effigy. The denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is placed along the lower rim, flanked by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the San Francisco mint mark S and designer initials JF appearing near the truncation of the bust.
