Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of George Washington, the first President of the United States, rendered after the 1932 portrait by John Flanagan and adapted from a sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery, while QUARTER DOLLAR appears along the lower periphery. The word LIBERTY is inscribed to the left of the portrait, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears in three lines to the right of the effigy. The San Francisco mint mark 'S' is positioned below the motto, and the designer's initials 'JF' appear incuse at the base of Washington's neck truncation.
