Acadia was the first national park established east of the Mississippi, originally protected under the name Lafayette National Park in 1919 before being renamed in 1929. The five-ounce silver bullion format was introduced in 2010 as part of the America the Beautiful series — a direct commercial response to the success of the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf and similar sovereign bullion programs that had eroded U.S. Mint market share through the 2000s.
Collector demand for the Acadia issue was notably strong, driven partly by the park's association with George Dorr, who spent his personal fortune acquiring land on Mount Desert Island before donating it to the federal government.
