Acadia was the first national park established east of the Mississippi, donated largely through the land philanthropy of George Dorr, who spent his personal fortune and decades of legal battles securing parcels on Mount Desert Island before the federal designation came through in 1919. The America the Beautiful quarters program, launched in 2010, was mandated by Congress to run through 2021 — five designs per year cycling through all fifty states, federal districts, and territories.
The silver proof version was struck exclusively for collector sets at San Francisco, using the same .900 fine alloy composition revived from pre-1965 circulating coinage.
