Acadia was the first national park established east of the Mississippi River, created in 1919 after wealthy summer residents — including the Rockefeller family — donated the land to the federal government to prevent commercial development on Mount Desert Island. It remains the only national park in New England. The quarter's issuance in 2012 placed it forty-third in the America the Beautiful series, which Congress authorized in 2008 to run through 2021.
