Reverse description A soaring bald eagle is depicted in full flight to the right with wings dramatically outstretched, rendered in high relief with finely detailed feathering. The motto E PLVRIBVS VNVM appears in two lines in the upper central field beneath the eagle. Thirteen five-pointed stars arc around the left and right periphery of the field, with no stars present below the eagle, distinguishing this as the Type 1 reverse. The circular legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA runs along the upper rim, and QUARTER DOLLAR along the lower rim, separated by centrally placed dots.
