| Описание аверса | The allegorical figure of Liberty is depicted seated left upon a rock, draped in classical robes, her left hand resting on a striped shield inscribed LIBERTY, and her right hand upraised holding a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap. Thirteen six-pointed stars encircle the field, seven to the left and six to the right. The date 1853 appears in the exergue, flanked on each side by a horizontal arrow — a distinguishing feature added to signify the reduction in the coin's silver content pursuant to the Act of February 21, 1853. A fine denticled border frames the entire design. |

The eagle clutches an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of three arrows in its left. Radiating lines emanate from behind the eagle in all directions, forming a glory or sunburst effect — a distinctive element of the 1853 arrows-and-rays type, present only on this single-year issue. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination QUAR. DOL. appears in the lower field. The design is enclosed by a denticled border. |
