| Opis awersu | The allegorical figure of Liberty is depicted seated facing left on a rock, draped in classical robes, her right hand grasping a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap and her left hand resting upon a striped shield inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery of the field, seven to the left and six to the right of the central device. The date appears in the lower exergue beneath the seated figure. The design, engraved by Christian Gobrecht and later refined by James Longacre, exemplifies the neoclassical style characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century American coinage. |
