Alaska joined the Union in January 1959, but its quarter didn't arrive until nearly fifty years later as part of the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program, which ran from 1999 through 2008. The program was authorized under the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act of 1997 — a piece of legislation that also quietly ended the longstanding practice of rotating quarter designs annually. Alaska's issue was the 49th released, in the order states ratified the Constitution or were admitted to the Union.
Struck at both Philadelphia and Denver, with San Francisco producing proof versions.
