Additional information

Cook Islands has issued commemorative quarters under licensing arrangements that have little to do with circulation currency — this piece, bearing Vermeer's painting, was produced for the collector market and never intended for exchange. The "Girl with a Pearl Earring," completed around 1665, is held by the Mauritshuis in The Hague and remains one of the most reproduced works in Dutch Golden Age painting.

At 50 grams on a copper core with surface silver plating, the piece is fundamentally a medal in coin clothing.
