| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty occupies the central field, her hair elaborately coiled and swept upward beneath a coronet, rendered in low relief typical of California fractional gold coinage. Five five-pointed stars are evenly distributed around the periphery of the octagonal field — two to the upper left, one to the left, one to the lower left, and one at the bottom — serving as decorative devices in lieu of a formal legend. The finely milled border frames all eight sides of the planchet, giving the coin a neat, regular finish. The portrait follows the Liberty Head type standard for California private gold issues of the post-Civil War era. |

| Reverse description | The denomination and date are displayed in three stacked lines at the centre of the reverse field: the fraction '1/4' above 'DOLLAR' and the date '1871' below, all in serif capital letters. A wreath of laurel or oak branches, tied at the base with a bow or ring, encircles the central inscription, its branches curving symmetrically to either side and meeting at top and bottom. Small pellets or berries accent the wreath at regular intervals, adding decorative detail consistent with the style of California fractional gold coinage. The milled octagonal border frames the design cleanly, and the overall composition is characteristic of privately produced California quarter-dollar gold pieces of the 1860s–1880s. |
