Five five-pointed stars are evenly distributed around the periphery of the octagonal field — two to the upper left, one to the left, one to the lower left, and one at the bottom — serving as decorative devices in lieu of a formal legend. The finely milled border frames all eight sides of the planchet, giving the coin a neat, regular finish. The portrait follows the Liberty Head type standard for California private gold issues of the post-Civil War era. |
