Jordan's quarter dinar was introduced as part of a decimal recoinage that replaced the fils-based system, giving the Hashemite Kingdom a more practical denomination structure for a rapidly modernizing economy. Hussein bin Talal had reigned since 1952 and by 1978 was navigating the delicate politics of a country absorbing successive waves of Palestinian refugees while maintaining ties to both Western powers and Arab neighbors.
