Sarawak's currency in the early 1860s was a patchwork of foreign trade coins, and James Brooke — the first White Rajah — had been pushing for a proper local coinage since acquiring his extraordinary personal sovereignty over the territory in 1841. This piece is a pattern flan struck during the transition to his nephew Charles Johnson Brooke's increasing administrative control, produced to test specifications before any circulating coinage was committed to production.
The broad flan designation distinguishes it from the narrower planchet trials of the same period. Neither variant reached circulation; the first confirmed circulating Sarawak coinage dates to 1863 under the KM#1 issue proper.
