Panama's canal-themed circulation coinage has been issued intermittently since the 1990s, but the quarter balboa denomination traces its origins to the 1904 monetary agreement with the United States, which pegged the balboa one-to-one with the dollar and effectively made U.S. coinage legal tender alongside Panamanian issues. The physical specifications of this coin are no accident — they match the U.S. quarter exactly, allowing both to circulate interchangeably in Panamanian vending machines and transit systems.
The canal itself was transferred to full Panamanian control on December 31, 1999, after nearly a century of U.S. administration.
