Obverse description The Portuguese Royal Coat of Arms occupies the central field, depicting the quartered escutcheon with castles and bezants in the traditional arrangement. The shield is flanked on either side by the mint letters 'D' and 'O', denoting the Dio (Diu) mint. The design is rendered in low relief consistent with hammered coinage, with the devices showing characteristic crude workmanship typical of colonial Portuguese Indian issues.
