The uppermost line gives the mint name 'Zarb-i Banaras' (Struck at Banaras), followed by the auspicious accession formula 'Sana Julus Maimanat Manus' (Year of the Auspicious Accession), with the Hijri date and regnal year below. The distinctive fish symbol (mahi), the dynastic emblem of the Nawabs of Awadh, appears in the field as a badge of royal authority. The overall die engraving is consistent with mid-nineteenth-century Awadh hammered gold production. |
