| Obverse description | Diademed and draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a small crown and veil, with a pendant earring visible. The effigy closely follows the Crowned Bust type used on contemporaneous British Indian coinage. Dewas was one of the more peculiar political arrangements in British India — a single town split between two Maratha Peshwa collateral lines, Senior and Junior Branch, each with its own ruler, court, and coinage. The Senior Branch traced descent from Tukoji Rao Puar, and by 1888 the state operated under tight paramountcy, leaving local coinage largely ceremonial in function. Narayan Rao's issues are sometimes confused with Junior Branch pieces by the uninitiated; KM#12 is specifically a Senior Branch product.
