Muscat and Oman occupied an unusual position in late 19th-century Gulf commerce — nominally independent but operating under heavy British influence through treaty obligations dating to 1891. This issue was struck for Sultan Faisal bin Turki, who ruled from 1888 to 1913 and navigated persistent tension between British commercial demands and his own authority over interior Omani tribal territories.
