Muscat and Oman's coinage in the 1890s was a direct consequence of commerce, not sovereignty — the Sultanate needed small-denomination copper to function in a trading economy dominated by the Maria Theresa Thaler and various Indian issues. Faisal bin Turki, who ruled from 1888 to 1913, commissioned these pieces largely to facilitate bazaar transactions that silver wouldn't reach.
