The Angel series was revived by the Isle of Man in 1984 specifically as a bullion-investment vehicle, drawing on the medieval English gold Angel — a coin so trusted for its purity that it was used ceremonially in the "touching" ritual, where English monarchs pressed Angels into the hands of scrofula sufferers believed to be healed by royal contact. The fractional Quarter Angel was added to broaden the series' appeal to smaller investors during a period when gold bullion coinage competition was intensifying from South African Krugerrands and the newly launched Canadian Maple Leaf.
Pobjoy struck this issue in multiple die varieties across the year, accounting for the divergent Schön references.
