Obverse description Archangel Michael depicted in full figure, facing front, thrusting a cross-tipped spear downward into a dragon prostrate beneath his feet, the wings of the archangel spread prominently to either side. The design is rendered in the bold, high-relief style characteristic of late Elizabethan hammered gold coinage. A Latin legend encircles the field, interrupted by pellet stops, identifying the sovereign. The overall composition follows the traditional Angel type iconography established in the medieval English gold coinage.
