The Cessetani occupied the coastal territory around modern Tarragona — known in antiquity as Kesse — and began striking their own bronze fractional coinage during the period of intensifying Roman administrative pressure following the Second Punic War. Rome's reorganization of Hispania into two provinces in 197 BC left indigenous peoples navigating an economy increasingly dominated by Roman military pay and taxation, yet local mints continued operating under a degree of autonomy that Rome found useful rather than threatening.
This fraction corresponds to a well-documented series catalogued under both the ACIP and CNH corpora, with typological links to other Iberian coastal mints of the same generation.
