Theodore Adolphus von Recke served as Bishop of Paderborn from 1650 to 1661, presiding over a diocese still physically and economically shattered by the Thirty Years' War. Small billon fractions like this were a practical necessity — the war had so thoroughly disrupted regional silver supplies and coin stocks that even minor ecclesiastical lordships were compelled to strike low-denomination issues to keep local exchange functioning. The .417 fineness reflects exactly that constraint: enough silver to circulate with credibility, no more than the bullion situation allowed.
