Reverse description The reverse, engraved by Wojciech Pietranik, presents a centrally placed coloured insert depicting a traditional black-and-white association football against a recessed field. Surrounding the central motif, the circular legend 2006 FIFA WORLD CUP arcs above and GERMANY with a trademark symbol appears below, all within a raised border. The outer annulus of the field is populated with sixteen dynamic silver relief figures of footballers depicted in various athletic poses — shooting, heading, diving, and dribbling — arranged at equal intervals around the circumference, conveying the energy and global spirit of the tournament.

Additional information

Australia's involvement with the 2006 FIFA World Cup was more than ceremonial — the Socceroos qualified for Germany 2006 after a 32-year absence from the tournament, ending a drought that had made the team something of a footnote in international football. The qualification came via a penalty shootout against Uruguay in November 2005, decided by goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, which generated enough national momentum to warrant this commemorative issue from the RAM.

The unusual $1.25 denomination places it in a small cluster of Australian decimal oddities with no circulation equivalent.
