Gibraltar's fractional gold series of the 1990s was largely driven by the collector market's appetite for affordable pure-gold pieces, and the 1/25 Crown denomination was among the smallest practical sizes the Royal Mint could strike at .9999 fineness without sacrificing detail. The Spanish galleon subject carried particular local resonance — the Strait of Gibraltar was the choke point through which Spain's treasure fleets passed for over two centuries, and the Rock's strategic value was inseparable from that traffic.
