| Additional information |
Pádraig Pearse was executed by British firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol on 3 May 1916, days after commanding the GPO garrison during the Easter Rising. A British Overseas Territory issuing his likeness on gold is a peculiarity that would have struck his contemporaries as absurd — Pearse spent his life agitating against the very Crown whose cypher appears on the obverse.
