Obverse description Central device depicts the crowned lion of Hesse rampant to the left, rendered in high relief with fine engraving detail on the mane and body. The lion stands on a horizontal ground line below which runs a decorative wreath border along the lower rim. The field is otherwise unadorned, with no encircling legend on this face. The heraldic lion, a traditional emblem of the Landgraviate of Hesse, is shown with tail raised and one forepaw extended, conveying strength and authority. The overall style is consistent with late 18th-century German small coinage engraving.
