John Adolphus ruled Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp for just four years before dying in 1616, but his coinage reflects the administrative complexity of the duchy's relationship with the Danish crown — the two shared sovereignty over Schleswig in a condominium arrangement that generated perpetual jurisdictional friction and distinct parallel coin series. The 1/24 Thaler denomination itself was a product of the 1559 Leipzig Convention, which attempted to standardize fractional silver across the fragmented German states.
