Additional information

Gustav Adolphus of Mecklenburg-Güstrow ruled a duchy already hollowed out by the Thirty Years' War, which had depopulated much of Mecklenburg and left its finances in chronic disorder for decades afterward. Small-denomination silver of this type was essential to daily commerce in territories where larger coinage rarely filtered down to ordinary transactions. The duchy itself was extinguished at Gustav Adolphus's death in 1695 — three years after this piece was struck — when the line died out and the territory reverted to Mecklenburg-Schwerin under the terms of the 1701 Hamburg family compact.
