George William's reign over Brandenburg-Prussia coincided with the Thirty Years' War at its most destructive, and the electoral territories were among the worst affected — occupied at various points by both Swedish and Imperial forces. His notoriously indecisive foreign policy, shifting between neutrality and reluctant alliances, drained the treasury and destabilized local coinage production across the 1624–1631 window this issue spans. The 1/24 Thaler denomination was the workhorse of everyday commerce in the fragmented German states, and Brandenburg's output during this period was driven by fiscal necessity rather than monetary stability.
