The Gymnasium Ernestinum in Gotha was founded in 1524 under Duke Ernst I, and by 1724 the institution had survived the Thirty Years' War, multiple dynastic partitions of the Ernestine lands, and the slow erosion of Thuringian political relevance. Frederick II marked the bicentennial with this struck issue — an unusual choice for a denomination this small, which suggests the coin was intended as a distributed commemorative rather than a prestige presentation piece.
