Obverse description Central field features the ornate interlaced royal cypher 'FR' (Fridericus Rex) rendered in elaborate Baroque calligraphic script, surmounted by a large royal crown with arched top and jewelled band. Foliate and scrollwork flourishes extend from the base of the cypher, filling the lower field. The date is divided to either side of the cypher, '17' at left and '53' at right. The coin is bordered by a fine milled or toothed rim.
