Saxe-Hildburghausen was one of the most financially precarious of the Ernestine duchies — so small and debt-ridden that the Imperial Aulic Council effectively placed it under financial administration in 1769, just nine years after this piece was struck. Ernest Frederick III Charles ruled a territory of roughly 400 square kilometers and was chronically unable to service the duchy's obligations without subsidies from the wider Ernestine circle. That this coinage was produced at all in 1760, the height of the Seven Years' War, speaks to the compulsory participation of even the most marginal German states in maintaining nominal monetary presence.
