Additional information

Barby was a tiny County on the Elbe, and by 1619 it was already caught in the dynastic complications that would define its final decades before absorption into Brandenburg. Albert Frederick and Jost Günther issued jointly — a co-rulership arrangement common among German small states when inheritance had not yet resolved cleanly between heirs. The year 1619 is notable: the Bohemian revolt that ignited the Thirty Years' War broke out that same year, and minor German mints across the region rushed small-denomination silver into circulation as economic uncertainty spread westward from Prague.
