August III ruled the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as an absentee king, spending the bulk of his reign in Dresden and leaving Polish fiscal administration to minister Heinrich von Brühl. The Leipzig (Lipsk) mint operated under a lease arrangement that was chronically controversial — critics in the Sejm repeatedly challenged the quality and weight of small silver issues produced there, and not without cause. The 1753 grosz coinage was minted amid ongoing disputes over whether the contracted minters were debasing output to profit on the silver differential.
Kopicki 11253 is among the more precisely documented varieties of this reign's fractional silver, though survivors in better than Fine condition are less common than mintage volumes might suggest.
