Obverse description Crowned double-headed imperial eagle displayed at center, with spread wings and detailed feather work rendered in the German baroque style. The eagle's breast bears a small escutcheon depicting the Lübeck city arms (a double-barred cross). The circular legend CIVITAT - IMPERIALIS runs along the periphery, affirming Lübeck's status as a free imperial city. The field is plain and unadorned, with the eagle occupying the majority of the coin's face.

Additional information

Lübeck's stubborn retention of its Free City status through the Thirty Years' War — which ended in 1648, just a few years into this type's run — meant the city maintained its own monetary authority while much of northern Germany was being reorganized under competing territorial powers. The 1/24 Reichsdaler denomination was the workhorse of the north German small-change economy, pegged to the Reichsthaler through the Leipzig Foot of 1566, a monetary convention that outlasted the political chaos surrounding it by well over a century.
