| Reverse description | A raised inner circle at center contains the denomination inscription 'نصف عشر' (half tenth, i.e. 1/20 of a Rial) in two lines, with a horizontal bar dividing the field within the circle. Surrounding the inner circle, the Arabic shahada 'لا إله إلا الله' (There is no god but God) runs along the upper portion of the field, while the mint name 'ضرب بصنعا' (Struck in Sanaa) and the Hijri date 1382 appear in the lower field. Two six-pointed stars serve as decorative punctuation flanking the legend. The bold, high-relief calligraphy is characteristic of Yemeni coinage of this period. |

| Additional information |
The Yemen Arab Republic came into existence in September 1962 following a coup against Imam Muhammad al-Badr, immediately plunging the country into a civil war that would last until 1970, with Egyptian troops fighting on the republican side and Saudi Arabia backing the royalists. Coinage was needed quickly to assert legitimacy, and this 1963 issue was among the earliest struck for the new republic.
The .720 silver content places it in line with transitional monetary policy — fine silver was not yet abandoned, but full sterling was no longer the target.
