Obverse description St. Mark, patron saint of Venice, stands at left in long robes, extending a staff surmounted by a cross toward the kneeling Doge at right; the word DVX appears vertically in the central field between the two figures. The Doge is shown in full ducal regalia, kneeling in a posture of piety and submission. The obverse legend identifying the reigning Doge runs along the periphery of the flan in Latin capitals. The overall composition follows the long-established Venetian zecchino iconographic tradition, rendered in high relief on a compact, irregularly-shaped hammered gold flan.
