Obverse description Facing bust of Saint Peter, bearded and nimbed with a radiate halo, shown in half-length above a quartered heraldic shield. The shield is divided into four quarters, with a lion rampant visible in one quarter and checkerboard or lattice patterns in the others, representing the combined arms of the Archbishopric of Cologne and the House of Hessen. Flanking the saint are archiepiscopal crosses, and small decorative stars are interspersed in the field. The surrounding legend in Gothic letters is partially legible around the irregular beaded border.
