Reverse description Central field features a floriated or Gothic cross with trefoil terminals at each arm, boldly struck within a plain inner circle. The cross arms are decorated with fleur-de-lis-style finials, giving the design an ornate Gothic character typical of Manueline-period Portuguese coinage. A circular Latin legend encircles the inner field, running between the inner circle and the irregularly toothed outer rim, with dot stops separating the abbreviated royal titulature. The overall style reflects the hammered die technique in use at the Lisboa (Lisbon) mint during the reign of Manuel I.
