Obverse description Central field displays the Portuguese royal quinas arrangement: five escutcheons bearing bezants disposed in a cross pattern, each shield charged with five pellets in saltire, evoking the traditional Manueline armorial composition. The five shields are set within a plain inner circle, with the field exhibiting the characteristic irregular flan surface of hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer rim, separated from the central device by a beaded or plain border, with the inscription partly obscured by irregular striking.
