Obverse description The central field displays the Portuguese royal arms arranged in a cruciform composition: four escutcheons bearing the quinas (five roundels in saltire) are disposed around a central point, with a fifth escutcheon at base bearing the castles of the Algarve, the whole forming the traditional arms of Portugal. The shield arrangement is enclosed within a beaded inner border. The circumferential Latin legend, reading .IOΛΝΝES IIII D G RE.P, identifies the issuer as João IV, King of Portugal by the grace of God, separated by pellet stops and set between the beaded border and the coin's irregular hammered rim.
