The Ilergetes were the Iberian tribe whose territory centered on the Segre and Noguera river valleys — the same region Hannibal crossed through in 218 BC at the outset of his invasion of Italy. Their bronze coinage, including this half unit, was minted during the Second Punic War, a period when both Carthaginian and Roman forces were actively competing for the loyalty of Iberian tribes. The Ilergetes under chieftains Indibilis and Mandonius shifted allegiance more than once across this conflict, and their coinage circulated through territory that saw near-continuous military campaigning.
Iltirta is identified as the tribal mint center, corresponding to the later Roman settlement of Ilerda — modern Lleida.
