Additional information

Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh's long reign — 1848 to 1896 — saw repeated attempts to rationalize Iran's chaotic coinage system, which had suffered from inconsistent minting standards across regional facilities for decades. The Tumân-based decimal reform of the early 1880s was partly driven by European creditor pressure and partly by the Shāh's own modernizing ambitions after his tours of Europe. Pattern pieces from this period were almost certainly produced in Tehran and represent trial strikings that preceded — or accompanied — official authorization rather than circulating issues.
