Āghā Moḥammad Khān founded the Qajar dynasty after decades of brutal consolidation, having eliminated every significant rival including the last Zand ruler, Lotf Ali Khan, in 1794. He was crowned in Tehran in 1796 — making this half-tumân among the earliest coins struck under formal Qajar authority. He was assassinated by his own servants the following year, 1797, during the siege of Shusha, meaning production of this type almost certainly ceased mid-year.
