| Obverse description | The Portuguese royal arms displayed within a plain inner circle: five escutcheons arranged in cross formation, each charged with five roundels (quinas) representing the five Moorish kings defeated at the Battle of Ourique, with a bordure of castles visible on the lower shield. The arms are struck in high relief in the hammered style typical of the period. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery between beaded borders, reading SEBASTIANVS:I:REX POR, identifying the issuer as King Sebastião I of Portugal. |

| Reverse description | A plain Greek cross occupies the center of the field, struck in bold relief, with a small annulet (pellet in ring) placed in each of the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross. This arrangement of four annulets flanking the cross is characteristic of the third type coinage of Sebastião I. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design along the rim between beaded borders, reading IN:HOC:SIGNO:VINCES, the Constantinian motto meaning 'In this sign you shall conquer,' punctuated by ornamental stops. |
