Reverse description A floriated cross of the Military Order of Aviz occupies the central field, with each arm terminating in fleur-de-lis motifs, giving the cross an ornate, pattée-like appearance characteristic of Portuguese Renaissance coinage. Small ornamental devices appear at the angles of the cross. The surrounding circular Latin legend IN:HOC:SIGNO:VINCES — meaning 'In this sign thou shalt conquer' — is separated by pellet stops and runs along the coin's periphery. The design is boldly struck in hammered technique, with some weakness typical of hand-struck silver issues of this period. The reverse imagery reflects the strong military and religious symbolism of the reign of Sebastião I.
