| Obverse description | Central field bearing the Portuguese royal arms: five escutcheons arranged in a quincunx pattern, each charged with bezants, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The royal arms are presented in the characteristic cross-shaped arrangement of the House of Aviz. The circumferential legend runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer rim, reading partially visible as IOANES IIII D G REX P, identifying the issuing monarch João IV, King of Portugal, by the grace of God. |
